Students Were Killed Yesterday

33 students died in a random act of violence yestarday at Va. Tech.

Let's talk about whether or not we're desensitized by media, when some of us are able to skip past such articles about abhorrent disasters when reading the papers (myself included).

See Tony's blog.

Violence has always been with us. Hundreds of years ago it was a means by which countries grew, were defended, food and shelter obtained. It was commonplace. Now violence has shifted into movies, games, and music, and out of our immediate vicinity and our daily lives.

Our cities and schools have developed a false sense of sanctuary - we believe we are safe here. This provokes random acts of terror - because in any system where something is surpressed it will find a way to surface, often in outbursts. Such is the nature of modern violence.

I believe that we skip over articles like this because deep down inside you know it can happen, and does happen. We are preprogrammed to accept it. It's unnatural to not have shooting rampages in the world. It's insane to think we live in Utopia.

And I'm ok being ok with this. I'm a humanitarian and yet, it seems as though this was a matter of time. Like a car that crashes through your livingroom at 3am, because the potential exists, you are a fool to be surprised when it does.
