Jason Mraz? Sir Bens? What?
So last night I'm down at Sir Ben's playing Open Mic Night. I get my set in around 11ish, then a few more people come after me. A guy plays the piano, then another guy. Then, this dude in a T-Shirt goes up on stage and says, "I just wrote these songs a few weeks ago. No one has ever heard them before."
Then he starts paying. I lean over and say to Clay, "This guy sounds like he gets most of his inspiration from Jason Mraz." We agreed, the vocal likeness was pretty uncanny. I began to be suspicious. Looking at the Open Mic sign up sheet I saw he was under the name "Eric". Of course, if it were Jason Mraz he wouldn't write down Jason Mraz, or it would turn into a fucking circus as a sea of college aged women swarm him, destroying Sir Bens and possibly Mraz himself.
I couldn't help it. I Google Image searched him on my phone. I had to be able to tell because it was driving me nuts. The exact same voice was just not enough. After reviewing his photos on Google, I was positive. Jason Mraz had just played Open Mic Night at Sir Bens and nobody there knew it was him. He was just trying out his new material, and the end of his set was a cover of the Beatles "Sexy Sadie" - Beatle covers seem to be one of Mraz's staples (I saw him cover a Lennon tune live in Tampa when he opened for DMB).
He's good. But I think last night I was better. Maybe that's why he didn't make eye contect. Because I straight up OWNED MRAZ. Lulz!
