My Party Made the News

Grandma's Marathon - June 16th, 2007.

It started slow. People started showing up around 7am.
12 gallons of beer. 4 gallons of Margaritas. 4 gallons of Bloody Marys.

More people came. The half marathon runners began to finish. We began to cook burgers.
11 gallons of beer. 3 1/2 gallons of Margaritas. 3 1/2 gallons of Bloody Marys.

We made signs in foreign languages and held them on the sidelines. I had written the local news prior to the event saying I'd be giving our foreign language runners words of encouragement like "Thank you for running." The below sign is in Portuguese and actually reads "I am drunk and you are functional."
8 gallons of beer. 2 1/2 gallons of Margaritas. 3 gallons of Bloody Marys.

People started taking drinking pretty seriously by the time the full marathoners were coming in droves. We loved the runners. Between runners, we loved each other.
5 gallons of beer. 1 gallon of Margaritas. 1 1/2 gallons of Bloody Marys.

The news arrived. They took video of us cheering and holding our signs. They interviewed us. Dustin told the reporter his name was Reggie Dunlop. His midrift cutoff mesh jersey was perfect attire when he told the news his sign was Dutch for "You run with great strength." It actually read "I'm drunk and you're running."
3 gallons of beer. No Margaritas. 1 gallon of Bloody Marys.

We brought the hose out to the road and began spraying the runners to cool them down. My house is on the 23rd mile of the race, and on an 85 degree day I bet that felt pretty good. We started bringing cold cups of beer to the runners, which were graciously accepted by about 15-20 of them.
1 gallon of beer. No Margaritas. 1/5 fifth of vodka left for Bloody Marys.

At the end of the party, we knew we had outdone ourselves from last years event, by which we had made the newspaper through a runners editorial.

Our TV coverage was featured on Saturday June 16th at 10pm.
